Using LEDs for flood lights- a great leap forward

Invention of flood lights have changed the way sports are conducted. Sports and other recreational events now to a great extent are held in the cool of evening without hampering the normal day time businesses.

Flood lights are powerful broad beamed lights of high lumen capacities arranged in an array or fixture to diffuse uniformly over a large area, illuminating it sufficiently for clear vision. It’s flooding an area with wide angled light beams that overflow each other’s boundaries. Given the outside uses of floodlights in most applications, they must be able to withstand shock and all types of weather conditions.

Why choose LED for floodlighting?

Why not! LEDs are far superior to the other types of lights (metal halide or high-pressure sodium) in terms of energy consumption, life span and better mesopic vision.

Ease of Use– LED floodlights, no matter the single lamp or the integrated fixtures, are compatible to standard flood lamps or fixtures. It means that you can replace an old type lamp by installing a LED flood lamp in a matter of minutes, or for that matter the entire fixture of LED lamps can be fixed simply by placing it in place of the old fixture.

No IR / UV radiation– LEDs don’t generate too much heat. The technology ensures no IR radiation, responsible for increase in the ambient temperature. Moreover, there is no harmful UV radiation and the fixture body maintained at an acceptable temperature.

More Lumens per Watt– LEDs are more efficient lighting source than the conventional metal halide or high sodium. 90-100 lumens per watt are generally available from LED flood lamps which are much beyond the values expected from High Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide.

Long life cycle– This is the most remarkable point in favor of LED lighting. The rated life of LED flood lamps in their full efficiency (from initial 100% lumen output to 50%) is around 50,000 hours. This is 10-50 times of the traditional lighting sources.

More robust technology– LED floodlights use chips that assemble tens of single LEDs or integrated high power emitters. There is no impact on the functions if one or several lighting units burn out.

More savings and design benefits– The LEDs have a unique property that allows them to generate different colors without filters. This results in an extra saving in consumption as there is no waste due to filtering. Moreover, LED floodlights are more compact in size and more direct in their design so as to avoid extra optical fixtures.

Motion and dawn -to -dusk sensors-  Some LED floodlights come with motion detect sensors and timers that can be set to make the LED  lamps remain on for a certain amount of time after detection of motion, and also can be turned on and off automatically at dusk and dawn.

Where can the LEDs are used

LED floodlights with IP65 ratings are waterproof and can be used for outdoor applications in all weather conditions. So whether they’re placed near a swimming pool, in a garden or a parking area, they will continue to work unperturbed.

Things to be considered before installation of LED

The size of the area to be lit up is important. Or may be that your floodlight is intruding into neighbor’s property. Accordingly, the angle of the lamps can be set.

Your floodlight may result glaring or some kind of vision distortion to oncoming drivers. Accordingly, the brightness of the LED floodlights should be considered.

Portable LED floodlights

These are of great use for outdoor locations of works, camping or in a garage/workshops where access to power is difficult. They are weatherproof and can be used to light up different sizes of areas. They come with adapters to charge from main power or car batteries. They have the properties and lifespan similar to their fixed type counterparts.
