Let there be Light – The History Of Lighting

Light is the most important necessity of man. We would not have succeeded in evolving and surviving on this planet if it was for light or fire. In primitive times it was a life saver keeping cave men warm and provided protection in the dark from wild animal attacks. This happened somewhere in 400,000 BC when homoerectus became the first to find fire. Later as mankind began to evolve and the first breaks of civilization began.

Torch lights

Man found the uses of fire for torchlight and travel, for cooking and drinking boiled water. Early men would carry the torch as a form of light.

 Candles

Candles last longer than oil lamps but have a much wider use. Today candles are mostly used for emergency power failures or religious or romantic adoration.

Oil Lamps

In the old days, oil lamps became famous and were the popular means of lighting systems. These lamps had appeared in the early centuries and were used widely by small civilizations. It was often dangerous and would sometimes catch fire. In fact, these lights were very dangerous to be used in mining areas due to the high content of methane in the mine. Hence the invention of Dave’s safety lamp.

Gas Lamps

With the widespread of the urban revolution and the spread of cities, the need for them to b well lit was the dire need. The evening would soon turn dark with people still out on the streets. Great minds came up with the idea of installing gas lams on every street. Of course, regular monitoring with high maintenance was a downpour.

Electric Lamp Lighting

In the 19th-century era, humans already had an artificial light with these conventional lamps but they were flawed from storing them, to transporting heavy barrels it was definitely a costly affair. That is until the invention that changed everything we now know as, electricity.

Halogen Light bulbs

A halogen light bulb looks almost the same as an incandescent one, but they are smaller in size. They were once used in huge excess but now with the new evolution of LED lights has put an end to its huge demands. These lights lack in power savings when compared to LED lightings. They also were used in most street lightings that are now being replaced by LED lightings.

LEDs – Light Emitting Diodes

A British experimenter by the name of Henry Joseph Round had one day noticed in his office at Marconi labs that a potential of about 10 volts that got applied to carborundum or silicon carbide crystal had emitted a yellowish light. Oleg Vladimirovich Losev a Russian had other analyzed and published his findings. He called it “Luminous carborundum detector and detection effect and oscillations with crystals“. These LED lights had a sparkling personality that soon outgrew conventional fluorescent and halogen tube lights. Being aster, low power consumption, smaller in sight, long lasting and double the brightness power they became the public and private demand on a global scale. Today LED lights are manufactured and produced on a huge market label.
